about

Carpet Floor’s debut CD, Majestic, is a collection of 22 tracks recorded live in the late 1990s. Largely comprised of duos for electric guitar played by Garry Davis (Custom Floor) and drums played by Matt Crane (BNSF, Custom Floor), the sounds on these tracks seamlessly flow from distorted psychedelic trance rock to rhythmic and free-form percussion to atmospheric clouds to freely-improvised noise interludes. Here and there, the band also brings into play their own unique instruments, such as steel rod and steel spring guitars, plus a wealth of toy instruments and other random objects. At the end of the day—and well into the wee hours—Majestic offers the adventurous and hungry ear a blissful, waking dream of free rock reality.

This is spontaneous music. None of it was practiced in advance. All of it was recorded live—with no overdubs, artificial reverb or effects added later—straight to digital audio tape with two overhead microphones only by Matt Crane. Tracks 5, 7, 14 and 16 were recorded live at the Ché Cafe in La Jolla, California on March 27, 1999. Track 15 was recorded live at The Casbah in San Diego, California on December 21, 1998. All of the Ché and Casbah tracks are excerpts from longer performances. All of the other tracks were recorded live in an empty room with no audience at Patrick Henry Middle School in Granada Hills, California circa 1998 and 1999. Track 16 is dedicated to the memory of Denver Lucas. This CD was mastered by Pete Lyman at Infrasonic in Los Angeles, California. In lieu of slammed volume levels, the full dynamic range of this music was preserved. The cover artwork consists of three drip paintings called Thinly Veiled made by Garry Davis at Patrick Henry at the time of the recordings. All music ©1998, 1999, 2007 Carpet Floor.

about

Carpet Floor California

Carpet Floor is Garry Davis and Matt Crane. Formed in 1996, the duo plays spontaneous music--completely made up on the spot and never practiced in advance. Garry plays guitar and Matt plays drums. Sometimes, they both also play other random objects. The sound ranges from heavy psychedelic rock to abstract improvisation with plenty of free jazz-influenced drumming and fuzz guitar destruction. ... more
